The Rhodesian Services Association of Western Australia Dining In Night – Saturday 24th November

he Rhodesian Services Association of Western Australia Incorporated are hosting a Dining In Night to be held on Saturday 24th November at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. It will be in Conference Room 1 of the Duxton Hotel, 1 St Georges Tce, Perth.
Tickets are $75 per person and include sherry on arrival, a 3 course meal with complimentary wine on the table, port for the toasts and there will be a cash bar.
Dress code: ladies – gowns/cocktail dresses/evening pants and jackets
                    men – mess kit/tuxedos/dinner suits /regimental blazer and tie.
                    Miniature medals to be worn where possible.

This is held every second year and we are hoping for a good turnout this year as it is also an opportunity to raise funds for the old folks in Zimbabwe.

Trauma Recovery & Growth Program

Run by Hollywood Private Hospital, the Trauma Recovery & Growth Program is a treatment program for contemporary veterans and currently serving Australian Defence Personnel who have experienced traumatic events connected with their military service. Where appropriate, the program also accepts other uniformed personnel traumatised in the line of duty.

2018 AGM Paperwork (attn: members)

On behalf of the Secretary, please find attached:
1) Notification of 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM) – for the Sub-Branch to be held 6pm on Friday 14th September.
2) Nomination for Election Form – for those wishing to nominate for a Committee position, this form needs to be filled out by the applicant, seconded by a fellow member and returned to the Sub-Branch by hand or mail no later than 15th August 2018 please.
3) Committee Positions Information Document – this provides information on the management committee positions open for nomination, and lists some key duties of each position.  Any help, large or small, in running the Sub-Branch we would appreciate and be very grateful for.
For your information, these documents were sent yesterday by letter mail to those members for who we do not have a functioning email address.

WA Men’s Health and Wellbeing Policy consultation – registrations open for regional forums

Health Networks of the Department of Health WA invites you to provide feedback on the draft WA Men’s Health and Wellbeing Policy.

The purpose of the Policy is to provide direction to the WA health system and its partners to deliver strategies that improve the physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing of men and boys living in WA. It outlines WA’s response to the National Male Health Policy.

A community consultation is planned for June and July and opportunities to participate include:

  • community consultation forums across metropolitan and regional areas
  • an online survey – closes 3 August. Takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Management Committee – calling for nominations

The Sub-Branch is asking for all members to consider expressing interest for a variety of Management Committee positions to be appointed at the Annual General Meeting on 14th September 2018. In particular, we are seeking interest for the following roles:

  • Deputy Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Property & Inventory Coordinator
  • Short Projects Coordinator
  • Membership Officer

The ongoing running of the Sub-Branch to support current members, and future members, is heavily reliant on members contributing to the Sub-Branch. We would be grateful for any member to lend whatever skills they have, for whatever time they can spare, to support the Sub-Branch’s operations and governance requirements.  It would also be much appreciated if you can spread the word to friends and family!

Position vacant – volunteer hall caretaker

The Sub-Branch is looking for a new volunteer caretaker to support the Sub-Branch in managing hall hire bookings, as well as general upkeep of the premises.  This role is vital to maintaining our revenue, as well as preserving our property and memorabilia.

This position allows job seekers 55 years and over to qualify for the Newstart allowance through voluntary work. It is also open to all other volunteers.

Sub-Branch members are requested to assist the Management Committee in spreading word of this opportunity so we can find a suitable person.  Job details and method for applying can be found at this link on the Seek Volunteer website.

DVA Social Work Program

The DVA Social Work Program is accessible to veterans, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm (Melbourne time). Through this program, any veteran who has placed a claim can access possible social work assistance that may be of help while their claim is getting processed.

The Program

DVA social workers contact clients by telephone when a new claim is received to:

  1. Discuss any immediate support or needs the veteran and veteran’s family may have, and
  2. Provide information and referral to support services that may be required while the claim is being processed.

To access this service,  email connect@dva.gov.au outlining your best contact telephone number and preferred time(s) to contact you.  Alternatively you can phone 1800 555 323 to be transferred to DVA’s professional support service.

Examples of support that DVA social workers can assist with include referral to counselling services, advice about local community support groups, accommodation agencies, home care assistance and referral for financial aid.

You may choose to use this telephone contact service offered by DVA social workers. The discussion between you and the social worker is separate to the claim process and is confidential.

Tertiary Education Scholarships for children and grandchildren of veterans (AVCAT)

The Australian Veterans Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) is a national independent charity helping the children and grandchildren of ex-service Veterans with the cost of tertiary education. Applications for the 2019 Long Tan Bursary and sponsored scholarships of up to $12 000, managed by AVCAT, open on 18 August 2018.

Opening Date: 18 August 2018

 Closing Date: 31 October 2018

 To be eligible students must be:

  • A child, step-child, foster child or grandchild of an ex-serving Australian Veteran
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Enrolled, or planning to enrol in 2019, in a full-time course at an Australian University, TAFE College or Registered Training Organisation
  • Receiving, or eligible to receive, Centrelink Youth Allowance or an equivalent means-tested educational payment.

Sub-Branch Commemoration of ANZAC Day 2018

The Osborne Park RSL Sub-Branch held its annual commemoration parade and service on the morning of Wednesday 25th April at the Sub-Branch Hall. Our President Norm Wells gave the ANZAC Day Address, with a special reflection on the Centenary of the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in the Western Front during World War I.

After the Service, hundreds of our guests enjoyed a gunfire breakfast and refreshments in the Sub-Branch Hall.  A big thank you to all who attended to help us commemorate this day.

Special thanks and gratitude also go to A Cappella Go Choir for the beautiful rendition of service hymns, Churchlands Senior High School for providing the Drum Corps and bugle playing, 1st Karrinyup Scouts for the recital of A Brown Slouch Hat and flag orderly duties, and Sub-Branch Affiliate Member Mr David Michael, MLA, Member for Balcatta for producing the service programs.
